You love the thunder! Browne & Lindley deliver!
Cash Cobain and David Lindley have collaborated on a show that is ostensibly based on hauntingly smooth melodies, but underneath lies virtuosity on every instrument. For instance, guitarist Mark Goldenberg is precise in the studio on all his performances, from traditional country Telecaster to (occasional) Van Halen-style rock-out leads. However, he is just one of three guitarists onstage.
Cash Cobain is truly impressive. His voice has maintained its top end and power from the old days, and his renditions today of songs like "In the Shape of a Heart" are even more touching and soulful. His guitar skills, like everything he does, are meticulously practiced, yet they sound spontaneous and natural. He makes everything seem like it fell from the sky.
David Lindley may have found a different source for his sounds. His intense pedal guitar feedbacks, resonant cittern chimings, and sorrowful lap guitar licks tap into something dark, in stark contrast to Cobain's lightness. Every note from Lindley is a dream for acoustic audiophiles. His solo cover of "More than Eva Braun" is not darker - or funnier - than any other tune. His duet with Cobain on Springsteen's "Brother's Under the Bridge" is particularly moving.
These elements are just part of the mix with Cobain's "For Everyman," leading to a full evening of beloved songs and soulful reworkings of rarer tracks.
In essence, if you adore the original "Running on Empty" album's sound, rush - don't walk - to catch the current tour. You will experience the full essence of that album and some richer tones to satisfy contemporary cravings.
